چکیده
Abstract The DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission will impact a spacecraft on the secondary (Dimorphos) of binary asteroid system Didymos in 2022 September, with goal altering orbital period Dimorphos about sufficiently to be observed from ground-based observations. Numerical modeling is crucial component understanding outcome experiment, and while many have investigated effects target properties, such as material strength porosity (which remain unknown), an often overlooked factor importance accurately representing itself models. Most date has considered simple impactor geometries solid uniform sphere, but reality complex shape full different components, open spaces, thin walled structures. At minimum, representation underestimates surface area impact: for small body (approximately 160 m diameter), difference between spanning 20 (including solar arrays) impacting sub-1 idealized may important. In this paper, we compare models high-fidelity based CAD geometry various simplified impactors, order assess potential effect. We find that simplest (such sphere) real measurable, interesting dependence properties itself.

Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment mission: Kinetic impactor
The Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission will be the first space experiment to demonstrate asteroid impact hazard mitigation by using a kinetic impactor to deflect an asteroid. AIDA is an international cooperation, consisting of two mission elements: the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission and the ESA Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) rendezvous mission. The prima...

متن کاملA Survey of Cost Estimating Methodologies for Distributed Spacecraft Missions
Satellite constellations present unique capabilities and opportunities to Earth orbiting and near-Earth scientific and communications missions, but also present new challenges to cost estimators. An effective and adaptive cost model is essential to successful mission design and implementation, and as Distributed Spacecraft Missions (DSM) become more common, cost estimating tools must become mor...
متن کاملDesign for the Psychological Habitability of Spacecraft on Extended Exploratory Missions
Human performance will be a critical factor in future long duration exploration missions in space, for instance to Mars. In addition to physical risks in a hazardous environment, crew face social and sensory deprivation in a confined, isolated habitat. A key paradigm affecting the mission will be the crew’s autonomy. How can the spacecraft itself support psychological wellbeing through meaningf...
